Quality teaching is the most important predictor of student learning. However, this is limited by a worldwide shortage of well-trained teachers: 69 million more teachers are needed to achieve universal primary and secondary education by 2030. Alongside this, the number of trained primary school teachers is 11% lower in Southern Asia compared to the global average.

That's why, at United World Schools, we prioritise ongoing teacher training. Our mission is not only to provide education to all, but to ensure that this is a quality education, which relies on quality teaching.

Teacher quality matters. In fact, it is the most important school-related factor influencing student achievement and progress. Teachers are central to the learning process and key to sustainable global development.

Additionally, research suggests that female teachers play an important role in addressing equity and access issues for girls, who still face more barriers in accessing education than boys.

So how do we ensure quality teaching?

We train local community teachers...

We support and develop teachers from within the community to work alongside government teachers. Training local teachers helps to ensure that education is locally contextualised, as a result this strengthens links between the community and the school. It also helps to protect indigenous languages, customs and cultures, and builds the capacity of communities. For example, read about Rochom's story here.

... and provide ongoing support and training.

• UWS Education Officers regularly visit our schools to monitor teacher performance and provide ongoing training and support where required.
• Teachers and schools receive a lesson quality score, based on metrics including: learning environment quality, student engagement, and lesson structure.
• We also develop School Support Committees: governing bodies made up of local leaders and parents who help to oversee the day-to-day running of the school. This gives communities increasing governance of schools, ensuring that they have a say in the school's progress and future plans, including plans for teacher training.

And, we ensure all our learning environments are engaging places to learn.

Across our schools, we have found that bright and engaging learning environments increase student attendance rates and encourage participation in lessons. By ensuring teachers are aware of these benefits, it encourages them to decorate their classrooms with educational materials and student's work.
