Now, over half the population survive on less than $1.25 a day. Nepal's literacy rate is among the lowest in the world, with many rural villages remaining unreached by government education.

Meet Sona

Sona is 10 years old and is the fourth of six children in her family. Her family depends on the $50 a month that Sona’s father earns as a farmer.

Sona is determined to lift her family out of poverty. She knows that education is the way to do this - that’s why she used to walk two hours each way to the nearest school. Although the long journey left her tired, she worked hard in class.

After UWS established a school near her village, her journey became a lot quicker. Sona has now been attending this local school for over three years and is thriving. She’s always at the top of her class and rarely misses a day of school.

After completing her education, Sona wants to become a doctor. By doing so, she hopes to challenge the traditional gender roles in her community.
